Chapter Seven

“How far is that damn waterfall?” Reggie complained.

Hunter glanced behind him and decided to slow his pace down. He walked alongside Reggie, who looked out of breath. Reggie even grabbed his arm occasionally as they traversed uneven ground.

“We’re near,” he reassured his mate-to-be. “You really weren’t kidding when you told me you weren’t in the fittest bill of health. Let’s stop. Drink this. It’s important to hydrate.”

Hunter handed Reggie a water bottle.

“Gee. Thanks, instructor.” Reggie took it, chugged it down.

“Woah. Slow down.” Shit. Maybe going on this hike wasn’t the best solution, but he really did want to show Reggie that waterfall.

It would make for a romantic setting. Hunter wasn’t exactly a guru when it came to romance. Sure, he never had trouble finding other willing men to satisfy his needs. He was a grown male dominant shifter, after all, but all he had under his belt were one-night-stands and plenty of regrets. There had only been one man for him, the one that got away. Reggie.

“I’m a lot better,” Reggie said, handing the bottle back. “Sorry, I get cranky when I’m tired.”

“I noticed, and that’s fine.” Hunter turned his head to one side. He could hear it, the sound of coursing water. Only a little farther and they’d arrive at their destination.

“This really is nice. The hike helped take my mind off stuff back at work, but me being all sweaty like this isn’t attractive.”

Hunter smiled. “Don’t worry about that. We’re nearly there.”

Hunter led Reggie past a thick growth of trees. Reggie let out a gasp behind him, probably catching sight of the tiny waterfall tucked in the corner of the woods. He knew few folks knew about this place, even the locals. The paranormals in town usually stayed clear of this area because his bear claimed it as his, and bears were known for being territorial.

Reggie gripped his arm. “Hunter, this place is amazing. Was this here all along?”

“I discovered it a couple of months after you left town,” he said, setting his pack down.

They didn’t talk for a few moments, simply enjoyed the scenery, but Hunter knew sooner or later they’d have that serious conversation.

Reggie looked at him, biting his bottom lip. “I’m not going to apologize for leaving.”

“I don’t expect you to. Back then, we were both young. I always knew you were destined for greater things, and this town would only drag you down. As for me, I had little control over my bear.” Hunter ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “Truth is, I was scared.”

Reggie touched his hand. “You, frightened?”

“Of hurting you without realizing it.”

“You broke my heart in two anyway.”

Hunter squeezed Reggie’s fingers. “Better that than seeing your bloodied body in my arms and not remembering what happened next.”

Reggie widened his eyes. “It was that bad?”

“My father was getting worse, started to uncontrollably change, and I was the only one who could handle him.”

Reggie’s eyes softened. “Oh God, Hunter. I had no idea.”

“It’s all in the past. Let’s lay the picnic blanket out and bring out the food.
